Restaurant Interior Design: Haldia Food Court Project
How Royal Decor designed and executed a vibrant food court interior in Haldia — balancing brand identity, high footfall durability, hygiene compliance, and Instagram-worthy aesthetics.

Haldia's dining scene is expanding — port professionals, township residents, and weekend visitors from Kolkata expect more than basic canteens. A new food court in central Haldia approached Royal Decor to create a cohesive interior housing multiple cuisine counters under one roof, each with distinct identity yet unified atmosphere.
Commercial food service interiors face brutal demands: grease, moisture, constant cleaning, high footfall, and the need to turn tables quickly while still feeling inviting. This project case study covers the design strategy, material choices, and execution lessons from a completed Haldia food court fit-out.
A restaurant interior must work as hard at noon rush hour as it looks in evening photographs.
Design concept: organised energy
The brief called for "organised energy" — lively enough to attract families and young professionals, calm enough that diners are not exhausted by visual noise. We developed a master palette of warm wood tones, matte black metal, and terracotta accents that individual vendors could extend with their own brand colours within defined zones.
Clear wayfinding from entrance to ordering counters, pickup points, and seating reduced congestion during peak lunch hours. Floor patterns subtly guide circulation without signage clutter.
- Six vendor counters with modular brand panels
- Central seating for 120 covers
- Shared wash and service corridor behind counters
Materials for commercial durability
Counter fronts use commercial-grade laminates rated for chemical cleaning. Stainless steel work surfaces behind counters meet food safety standards. Seating areas feature vinyl-upholstered benches and wipeable tabletops — fabric upholstery was ruled out early.
Flooring is large-format anti-skid vitrified tile with minimal grout lines for hygiene. Ceiling uses metal baffles and acoustic panels to reduce echo in a high-ceiling volume filled with conversation and kitchen noise.
Lighting for food and atmosphere
Warm pendant lights over tables make food photography flattering — a genuine revenue driver for social-media-savvy venues. Counter zones use brighter neutral task lighting so menus and food displays read clearly.
All fixtures are LED for energy efficiency and low heat output near food preparation areas. Emergency and exit lighting integrated during ceiling planning met fire safety requirements without last-minute surface conduit.
Ventilation and MEP coordination
Food court success depends on smell management and comfort. We coordinated with HVAC consultants on make-up air, exhaust routing for individual kitchens, and AC load calculations for a space that swings from empty mornings to packed weekends.
Grease-trap access panels and utility chases were planned into the design — not carved into finished walls after opening. Royal Decor's turnkey coordination with MEP trades is critical in commercial timelines measured in weeks, not months.
Results and client feedback
The food court opened on schedule after a ten-week fit-out. Footfall exceeded projections within the first month — owners attribute part of that to interior "discoverability" from the main road and social media posts featuring the seating zone.
Maintenance has been straightforward: specified materials have held up to daily commercial cleaning without delamination or fading. Vendor turnover is simplified by modular counter panels that new brands can reskin without structural rework.
